Q: In Ohio, who is required to obtain a Fire Protection Certification?

A: All persons involved in the installation, service or maintenance of fire protection equipment, including sprinkler systems, fire detection, fire extinguishing systems and fire extinguishers “for profit”.


Q: Is there a job experience or training minimum requirement to become certified in automatic sprinklers and standpipe systems, fire pumps, fire alarm and detection equipment or portable fire extinguishers?

A: No job experience or training is required


Q: Are you required to take an exam to become certified?

A: Yes


Q: What is a passing score for the exam?

A: 70% or better is a passing score to become certified.


Q: What is the fee to take the exam?

A: $50.00 per test – this covers two attempts in case you fail the first time.

Q: Are the exams offered more than once a year?

A: The exams are offered many times per year – please refer to State Fire Marshal’s website for exam dates http://www.com.ohio.gov/fire/docs/fire_COM5054.pdf


Q: How many exams can I take on the same day?

A: The exam period is 2 hours – you can take as many exams as you want in that period. However, it is suggested not to take more than two in one day.


Q: How are exam results received?

A: Passing grade – license will come in the mail or you can also check the website @ https://www.comapps.ohio.gov/sfm/fire_apps/fmtr/fpi_lookup/ to search for your certifications.
Failing grade will result in receiving a letter by certified mail to enable you to reschedule a re-test date.


Q: How long does it take to receive exam results?

A: Five to seven working days, sometimes less, check the link above.


Q: Is there a fee to re-test?

A: Your original fee covers the cost of the initial test and one re-test. If you fail the re-test you will must apply again and pay the $50.00 fee.

A: No, the state of Ohio does not recognize certifications/licenses from other states.
