NICET … What’s in it for me? From the July 08 issue of FPC

Training Materials for NICET Exam Preparation

By Dave Craynon

For many people, NICET certification is not an option, but a requirement, typically mandated by a state governing agency. For others, the question is, “Should I go for my NICET certification?”

NICET certification provides industry professionals with a way to prove not only their experience, but hard work and dedication. More and more people are using NICET as a means to further their career, as it signifies the attainment of industry standards, and is viewed as a “seal of approval.”

Receiving NICET certification is a journey. There are four NICET certificates offered for the fire protection industry: Automatic Sprinklers; Fire Alarms; Inspection & Testing of Water Based Systems; and Special Hazards. Within each of these sub-fields, NICET provides certification at four different levels. Each level builds upon the last and each level’s experience requirement increases.

Lisa Salzman, CIO of Fire Tech Productions, relates the NICET curriculum to that of a large university. “Think of it like this,” says Salzman, “An educational institution offers certain classes (e.g., elements in NICET). Some classes are general education (general elements), some classes are required to obtain a degree (core elements) and some classes offer specialized instruction within the field (special elements).”

NICET also refers to “crossover” elements, which are fundamentals that provide credit in more than one sub-field. For example, passing the element called “NFPA Standards” gives credit in Sprinklers, Fire Alarms, Inspection & Testing, and Special Hazards. “We get many calls from experienced business owners who now face the task of becoming NICET certified because of new state regulations,” said Salzman. “One of Fire Tech Productions’ primary goals is to provide comprehensive guidance to those individuals and companies, from start to finish.”

For those starting out, negotiating the entire NICET process can seem complicated, confusing, and intimidating. Paramount to the Fire Tech management team is to provide an economical mechanism that enables individuals and companies to garner a better understanding of the entire certification process. Knowing that the customers’ success is key to its own, Fire Tech Productions is working to provide concise, accurate training materials in a variety of mediums. From audio, to text, to online, with plans to host live seminars in the future, Fire Tech Productions offers NICET training material for Sprinklers, Fire Alarms, and Special Hazards certification.

The initial online course offered by Fire Tech Productions was a preparatory module for the Ohio Sprinkler & Standpipe certification. Having experienced the frustration of employees failing the exam, not to mention the time and money spent on travel and testing, I, Dave Craynon, President of Fire Tech Productions and owner of a sprinkler company, developed a test preparation course for my employees. After initial success with a live version of the program, the curriculum was converted to an online course that’s now available with over 100 pages of training slides and 200+ questions included.

“Thanks to your training course I passed the test on my first attempt without any prior experience” said Sean Brannen, one of the initial course attendees.

If the first year of new ownership is any indication of the future, Fire Tech Productions and its customers will pass with flying colors.
