OLD DOGS CAN BE TRAINED!

We all know the old saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks."   Well, I'm a veteran of the fire protection industry with more than 43 years in this business.  Believe me, I know how hard it can be to face the prospect of studying up on new material and mastering the tests you are required to take for certification. You may be a veteran when it comes to installing sprinkler systems or fire alarms and have decades of experience, but now you need to "go back to school" to learn new information and take a test that may mean keeping your current job or getting a new one.

I too have recently attended some seminars to learn new ways to get business because if you are going to survive in these challenging economic times, it's never too late to learn!

Here are some ideas to help you master that new trick and do your best with training:

  • Figure out your learning style-- do you like to listen to a presenter and take notes or read material on your own?  Some people learn better by listening and writing, others by reading and memorizing.
  • Choose a focused time for your training classes and study time. Block out scheduled time each week so that you don't neglect this important new venture.
  • If you find yourself unable to master a concept and getting frustrated, there's nothing wrong with taking a break to clear your head.  Sometimes walking away from a frustrating problem allows us to see it better when we look at it again.
  • Train and study with a team if you can, to help support your new venture.  Or involve your family members so they can help you study or at least encourage you every day to keep at it.
  • Most importantly, commit yourself to the challenge of training and certification.  You can always learn a few new tricks to put with your current bag of skills that will make you even more valuable in this industry.

It's never too late to learn,

INTERESTING FACT
People in homes with sprinklers are protected against significant property loss—sprinklers reduce the average property loss by 74% per fire.
